Title: Creature of the Night
Format: Fanmix
Bands: None specified, but My Chemical Romance is the only band whose music appears in the mix and the one that was considered most while putting this together.
Pairings: None specified, though the existence of a romantic pairing is heavily implied.
Size: 46 tracks + bonus (224MB)
Rating: T/PG-13
Warnings: Death, murder, addiction (alcohol abuse), non-graphic violence, and blood mention in song lyrics. Possible implications of domestic/relationship violence depending on your interpretation. Implications of stalking and obsessive, one-sided romantic interest. Gratuitous angst about being a monster who ~can't help~ hurting people.
Summary:
This is a collection of songs about monsters: literal and figurative monsters, teenage and don't-ask-how-old-I-am monsters, implied monsters and explicit monsters, lo-fi monsters and hi-fi monsters, cheesy B-movie monsters and serious grimdark monsters, repentant monsters, exultant monsters, infatuated monsters, lonely monsters, monsters who are creepy and monsters who are not creepy, and monsters pursued in private planes by early rock'n'roll legend Bo Diddley. The story arc concerns a monster who stalks the night, falls in love, and experiences heartbreak.

01. “Daybreak” by Harry Nilsson & Ringo Starr

This track, from the original soundtrack of Son of Dracula (1974), opens with a cheesy B-movie style monologue that leads into the upbeat lament of a vampire prince with a hangover. Thematically appropriate!

02. “Creature” by Tijuana Panthers

I don’t work nine to five, I work five to nine
...
My nights, they run into the daylight
My days, they don’t, don’t feel right
I’m just a creature
(Creature of the night)

03. “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” by The Cramps

No one could make me stop
...
Somebody please make me stop
...
All my teachers thought it was growing pains, oh no no
Somebody stop this pain

04. “Date with the Night” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs

Included here solely for the line:

I got a date with the night

05. “The Beast Within” by Be Your Own Pet

I just wanna stay out all night
So what if I kill my head
I don’t wanna go to bed

I’ve got nothing left to learn
I’ve only got more time to burn

06. “Primal Kids” by Waylon Thornton and the Heavy Hands

We don’t do nine to five
...
We stay eternally young

07. “We Own the Night” by The Donnas

The sun comes down and we come out

08. “I Drink Blood” by Rocket from the Crypt

It makes me feel alive

09. “Night of the Vampire” by The Moontrekkers

Super-cheesy early 1960s instrumental replete with coffin-opening and blood-sucking sound effects.

10. “Riboflavin-flavored, Non-carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood” by 45 Grave (Don Hinson and the Rigamorticians cover)

1960s novelty hit covered by classic goth punk band 45 Grave.

11. “Bo Meets the Monster” by Bo Diddley

This is kind of out of place -- it's about Bo Diddley's encounter with a Flying Purple People Eater. I will level with you. There are two reasons I chose to include this song on the mix:

  1. It's awesome.
  2. I think it transitions really well from the end of "Riboflavin-flavored, Non-carbonated, Polyunsaturated Blood.”

And that’s it. Hopefully you like it!

12. “Frankenstein Twist” by The Crystals

Just a cute novelty song about a dance called the Frankenstein Twist? We are firmly in the “novelty song” section of the mix at this point.

13. “Monster Motion” by Frankie Stein and His Ghouls

Wacky, catchy instrumental + screaming and howling sound effects.

14. “Devil Exit from Fashion” by Messer Chups

I was looking up synonyms for "fast" and found a word I've never seen before: "velocious." How do you use that in a sentence?  Anyway, "Devil Exit from Fashion” is an energetic electronic/surf/rock thing with feverish, distorted B-movie voiceover excerpts, and I think it fits well between “Monster Motion” and “Demons.”

15. “Demons” by Chelsea Wolfe

Demons demons demons demons

Self-explanatory?

16. “Goo Goo Muck” by The Cramps (Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads cover)

The city is a jungle and I’m a beast

17. “Happy Again” by Eureka California

I can’t believe I’m stuck here in the room
When I look out my window at night, I don’t see the moon

Sidebar: If you like this song, you should check out Eureka California’s Bandcamp page (eurekacalifornia dot bandcamp dot com, I'm loath to link directly because Reasons). Their album Crunch is among my favorite of 2014.

18. “The Sound of Settling” by Death Cab for Cutie

I've got a hunger twisting my stomach into knots

19. “Howl to the Moon” by The Bloodstrings

What have I become?
Now I’m howling through the woods every night!

Note: The Bloodstrings are darling and you can download their first EP, Hit You Hard, from thebloodstrings1 dot bandcamp dot com (for money or for free).

20. “House of Wolves” by My Chemical Romance

And as the blood runs down the walls,
You see me creeping up these halls
I've been a bad motherfucker

21. “Phantom's Theme” by Paul Williams (Phantom of the Paradise OST)

To work it out, I let them in
All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been
All the devils that disturbed me
And the angels that defeated them somehow
Come together in me now

I have included this song not only because it's monstrously angsty, but also because it links up to this line from "Sleep" by My Chemical Romance:

All the good guys and the bad guys,
All the monsters that I've been

Which I am pretty sure is a deliberate reference to "Phantom's Theme"/Phantom of the Paradise anyway.

22. “Monster” by Kanye West ft. Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Bon Iver, & Nicki Minaj

Obligatory.

23. “Blah Blah Blah” by Say Hi to Your Mom

I am gonna drink your blood

24. “The Horror of Our Love” by Ludo

I want you stuffed into my mouth
Hold you down and tear you open, live inside you

25. “Killer” by The Hoosiers

It's all right to scream, I'm screaming too
Why do you think I do the things I do?

26. “Climbing Up the Walls” by Radiohead

Either way you turn, I'll be there

27. “Howling at the Moon” by Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti

Wish upon a star that's bright
Count on your dreams filling the night
As comets race across the moon
You see that love is coming soon
(Howling at the moon)

28. “Held by the Spell of the Moon” by Kate Smith

Moonlight, moonlight
Look what you're doing to me

29. “The Moon is High” by Lotte Kestner

Keeping the softness/love theme of the previous track and the obsession/two-people-merging-into-one theme of this section, we have:

I have your name written under my palm
Touches everything that I touch
...
I have your hand watching over my skin
And when I'm asleep
...
I have your ink pulsing under my skin
And into the night

30. “Wolf Alice” by Erin Tobey

Out of love, you drank his blood
Now what will you become?

31. “Wild in the Woods” by Dead Can Dance

Wild in the woods of love
We harm those whom we adore
And contrary to all good intentions
We suffocate them in an alarming embrace

32. “Feral Love” by Chelsea Wolfe

Run from the one who comes to find you
Wait for the night that comes to hide
Your eyes black like an animal

33. “Orange Juice” by Rose Kemp

I became the wolf from my dreams
You knew I had it in me

34. “Taste of Blood" by Mazzy Star

The taste of red
The taste of fear
From your seemingly convincing smile

35. “Reynardine - A Vampire Legend” by Buffy Sainte-Marie

Cover of an English ballad about a possibly-supernatural bandit who seduces young women and spirits them away to his castle.

36. "Nosferatu" by The Coral

He only wants you for your blood

37. “Woke Up Next to Rows of Teeth” by Our Sunday Affairs

You're gonna hunt me down, gonna make me feel
You're gonna chew me out till there's nothing real

Try as I might, I can't quite jump into an empty grave of mine

38. “Violence” by Rose Kemp

You don’t know why you’re still alone
But the intimacy shown is enough to make me certain
...
And nothing is right in my head
No, nothing is clear in my heart
I feel like my body is dead

39. “Turn Into” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I'll turn into the only thing I ever turn into

40. “2 ALL THE GIRLS WHO HAVE TRUSTED ME” by Wise Blood

I've got the sun in my eyes
It's getting harder to see
...
My heart goes out to all the girls who have trusted me

The lyrics here maybe aren't tremendously applicable (except for the bit about the sun), but the feelings of regret, nostalgia, and finality are.

41. “Have Fun Rotting By Yourself” by The Arrogant Sons of Bitches

Downbeat punk song about loneliness, betrayal, the end of a significant but unhealthy relationship, and the singer's intention to leave town. The lyrical content isn’t terribly thematically appropriate, but I think the title works pretty well for the mix.

42. “Rio de Sangre” by Thee Imperial Royales

Brooding surf rock that evokes a mood of departure and travel.

43. “Need More Blood” by Waylon Thornton

I hate this world
I need love just like I need more blood

44. XXXX by Studio Pixel [Not a real track]

This is actually just 17 seconds of silence from the soundtrack of the game Cave Story, inserted here because I feel the transition between "Need More Blood" and "Horror Pictures" is too abrupt.

45. “Horror Pictures” by The Calvanes

The end of the romance has been addressed, so here's a callback to the mix's beginning, a lighthearted and silly novelty song about a narrator who keeps freaking himself out with TV horror movies.

46. “Beware” by Bill Buchanan

Have you ever thought your boyfriend
Might be a teenage ghoul?
...
When your boyfriend takes you out at night, what does he like to do?
Go to dark and scary places, or see a monster show or two?
Does he seem to like the moonlight?
Does he kiss you on the neck?
Why does he say you’re his forever...?
You’d better check your neck!!

Bonus Track -- "Nobody Likes You (When You're Dead)" by Zombina and the Skeletones

Just cause I'm biting on your head
There's no need to be impolite

And if I still had eyes
Then I would surely cry

Nobody likes you when you're dead
And that's the story of my life

That’s a wrap! Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy the mix and complement fics. ♥
